I came across a Schield Bantam C350 Ser #10644 (Diesel) crane with a hook, clam bucket and drag line. Does anyone have any information on this model such as the year built, weight of machine, where i can find parts or have them made and last what it might be worth, the glass is all there and he has the full repair and operating manual for it. Machine has been sitting for 10-15 years since the last time they used it. Owner tried to start it for me by cleaning the filters then he put the fuel line from the injection pump into a fresh container of fuel. Engine started but began to gain rpms rather fast so we pulled the fuel line to shut it down. Throttle cable and fuel shut off are disconected but the idle spring was holding it in the idle position. Any toughts on this? Maybee sucking old fuel from the return line in the old tank.
Aso he says it does not travel due to a single pinion gear that is located to the left of the operators seat under a small trap door. I looked at it and it is missing several teeth. Anyone Know if this gear can be found or repaired and how big of a job to take out. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

If the C350 has a Detroit Diesel 3-53 the first thing to do is remove the valve cover and make sure the rack (controls the injectors) is not stuck. One or more injectors could be stuck after sitting for this long but a little finesse can loosen them. Also many time engine rpm is a little hard to control if there is air in the system and as long as it will stay at an idle don't worry to much about it. Is the pinion with the missing teeth on the vertical shaft or the power shaft?

How would you go about cleaning the injectors? Remove them and soak them in somthing? I was talking to someone that used to run these old machines and he told me to mix some methanol in with the diesel fuel and run it to clean them. Is this true?
As i remember when you look down from the operator seat area there is a small trap door. The ring gear is in a flat position to the floor and the pinion gear is in a vertical position going to the left side. Ring gear is approximately 12" diameter and the pinion gear approx 3". Both are a bevel gear.
I am going to try and get up there again this week to get another look at the gear. The owner is firm on $3,000. for it but i am not sure if it is worth it having to find and replace that gear if that is all that is needed plus the work needed on the injectors and rack. I was not able to try and operate any thing on the machine as it was starting to rev higher and higher just before we shut it down.

Well the first thing is to determine "if" you have a stuck injector. By operating the the stop and throttle levers on the governor (assuming it is a Detroit) and watching the injector control levers you should be able to determine if you have a stuck injector if the tube will not rotate easily. Take some good pictures of the gears and box, it's been a few years and hard to remember what it consists of. I don't believe it is that difficult to remove the power shaft pinion but again a picture would help.

More information. The pinion gear is in a horizontal position (my mistake). Someone sent me a diagram and it appears the pinion gear that is bad comes out from the transmission and meshes with the vertical drive shaft. The gear and shaft look to be all 1 piece. How hard is this to replace? Would the transmision have to be taken completly out or can it be worked on from within? I still wonder why this gear broke in the 1st place. Maybe something else broken internaly ?
