Hi - This past Sunday I heard a sound not heard since my childhood. While at a truck show a Cat 922 loader was working nearby. I was transported back in time 30 years when a local construction firm had several of these and plowed the yard of the school I was at. How was I supposed to learn anything with a 922 and big one-way plow working outside? The engine had a distinctive growl. I tried to get a look at the one at the show but it was nowhere around. What engine was this? Thanks, Mike

I believe that 922 used an 80-horsepower Caterpillar Model D330, four-cylinder diesel engine. Hopefully others on the board can confirm my recollection. A gas engine was also offered, but was a much rarer option as I recall.
A local contractor I used to wander over to watch had a combination of 922 and Cat 955H crawler loaders, all diesels, in his fleet. I would spend hours after school watching them expand our development into the woods, preparing both new roads, new house lots, and foundations with their Cat equipment. A small fleet of Bucyrus cable hoes and shovels was used to put in waterlines and sewer lines, along with a Buckeye wheel trencher. If I only had a movie camera at the time!

Thanks Randy - I thought that it was a 4-cylinder. The contractor, Gurney Bros. is still in business and may have one kicking around. I want to go take a look at their boneyard someday. Mike - Springfield,Vt.

Mike,
I'm always cruising around looking for old equipment, and if I spot a 922 worth mentioning, I'll get you the details.
I've seen a number of 922's turn up on the Yesterday's Tractors site in the last year (http://www.ytmag.com), and one or two on Ebay. They do seem to turn up in sometimes suprisingly good condition.

You appear to have caught that right....perhaps they did a repower at some point?
Here's a D330 - marine application - but the block looks nothing like what is shown in the picture of the 922 for sale:

There's a 922 wheel loader for sale on 23 Mile Rd just East of Hayes Rd in Macomb Twp., MI. (23 miles north of Detroit). Not sure what they're asking. It just showed up last week. Owners are sewer contractors.
