To bad the Spade is being cut up. Guess you can't save every stray cat.

Unfortunately greed won out in the end with the Spade. Corporate greed. I've been in a foul mood since it was announced it would be scrapped.

I was out there just yesterday 1/27/07 and cutting has definately begun. They've cut some small holes in the side and have begun working on the bucket arm. It won't be long now :(

What gets me is that they said it would cost 1.6 million to reclaim the land around the Spade. Won't CONSOL have to reclaim that land anyways? Another thing they are saying is that Ohio has very inflexible reclaimation laws.

My grandmother just got her Harrison News Herald today and there is an article about the scrapping of the Spade in it. I have talked to several people around my area so far and none seem happy about Consol's decision to scrap the shovel. Several are hoping that this will come back to haunt the company someday. Another thing I have heard that there just wasn't enough time between Consol's announcement of a price on the land and then their decision to scrap the shovel to do anything.
One thing that I have also heard is that there are federal funds set aside for reclaiming the land that companies are supposed to use. Now that might not apply to big corporations like Consol, but it is an interesting fact to know and point out.

Sorry to see the ole girl go the way of the scrap heap. At least they are preserving the bucket, control room and another piece of her at the Harrison Construction Park. I saw it run from a distance and while it was parked out by Stumptown Steam Threshers Club grounds near Athens Ohio. Hope they do a nice park setting like the county did for the bucket off of the Big Muskie Dragline over in south central Ohio. A fine piece of equipment lost forever!!!

According to photos e-mailed to us by a member, the boom was dropped (by parting the support cables with small explosives charges) on Friday, February 9. It appears to be completely disconnected from the machine.
