Hello Folks, Carl B. from da U.P. here, A few weeks ago I hauled an old Trojan loader, I would estimate late 50's vintage, for a Chap that bought it to use on his farm. My question pertains to the bucket dump cyls. They struck me as odd, in that they had kinda small looking rods going to the bucket, and rather large rams coming out the other end that attached to nothing I am wondering what possible purpose they may have served, and also, it seems to me like they just gave ya another set of seals and more chrome to worry about! I can just about picture dirt landing on them as you are working the machine, and grinding it's way into the seals and Fouling them up, and ,of course, causing precious oil to leak. If anyone knows what the reasoning behind this design was, I would appreciate the enlightenment, Thanks Folks, Carl B. You betcha Pard!!

The following answer is from a former TROJAN loader engineer:
They were designed that way to speed up the bucket dump cycle. As I vaguely recall, bucket rollback was from the rod end and area and pressure controlled breakout force. The bore of around 5 inches or so would have made for a slow dump using the whole piston area, because of limited pump flow. To increase the dump speed, the cylinder had a dual rod which protruded out the base end and reduced the piston effective area considerably on the dump side. So, the small pump still gave a dump speed of about 2 seconds. I believe the cylinder was trunnion mounted on the sides.

Thank you very much Sir! I didn't know if anyone was ever going to reply with an answer for that post! That sounds very logical and I would say that my question has been answered! Thanks again, Carl B.

That loader was most likely from the 60â??s instead of the 50â??s. Would you happen to know the Model number? Better yet could we get the contact info on the new owner? We would like to have photos and more info on the loader. You can contact me at theflyingtournapull@hotmail.com.
